Healthcare Collections
– Developed for Hygiene, Durability and to Enhance Well-being

Sørensen Leather has developed two high-performance protected leather collections, specifically for healthcare interiors where hygiene, durability and emotional comfort are essential.

Our materials are designed to meet the increasing demands of modern healthcare environments — balancing clinical requirements with human-centred design.

Responding to a Growing Healthcare Demand

With the rapid ageing of the world’s population, healthcare demand is rising significantly with the increase of chronic diseases, rising healthcare challenges, a growing need for rehabilitation and long-term care, and a projected doubling of hospital days among people aged 70+ in Denmark alone.

Recognizing this shift, Sørensen Leather participated in a structured, research-based development project driven by the Danish Technological Institute. A project focused on exploring the real potential of natural leather as an upholstery material for interior design and furniture solutions in the care sector, where particularly high standards are placed on hygiene, comfort, functionality, documentation and responsibility.

Developed for Healthcare – Based on Research
The project provided us with a stronger basis for decision-making and a more qualified approach to working in this environment. Over the past year, we have been working to translate knowledge into a concrete concept, which we are happy to launch.

CURACARE is the outcome of this project. A high-performance protected leather, developed specifically for healthcare interiors where hygiene, durability and emotional comfort are essential. CURACARE joins TRIUMPH CRIB 5® as the two Sørensen Leather’s genuine leather collections for high-performance environments.

Why is leather a sustainable material?
Raw hides are a bi-product from the meat and dairy industry, which we upcycle into high-quality leather, through responsible production processes. Leather is one of the most durable materials that can be used for furniture upholstery. Its long durability can reduce the need for replacement and overall material consumption.
Why is leather a sustainable alternative for furniture in healthcare environments?
Raw hides are a natural, circular material, which we upcycle into leather through responsible production processes. Leather is also one of the most durable materials that can be used for furniture upholstery. In line with the standards from “Grønne hospitaler” which require Danish healthcare institutions to reduce their carbon footprint, we have conducted a lifecycle assessment of our leather and have documented carbon footprint of 8,7kg CO2e/m2 of leather. The long durability of leather is a key factor when estimating its environmental impact, as the longer the lifespan of leather, the lower the yearly emissions. This data can be used by healthcare institutions on their calculations.

Why is comfort important in healthcare upholstery?
Leather is a breathable material, which adds extra comfort to your seating solutions. Comfortable materials are better when it comes to seating for prolonged periods of time, they improve patient well-being and help to create a more homely and less institutional environment.

Combining advanced performance with behavioural design research, CURACARE supports modern healthcare environments that prioritise high-performance natural materials and patient well-being.
